In 1John 2:27-28 we see three abiding’s. The first two are passive on man. The Spirit abides in us in the new birth and we abide in the Lord, legally and positionally. It is with this truth in our heart that we can combat the doctrine of Gnosticism (carnal reasoning). We are then encouraged to abide in the Lord in a practical sense in this life. Our abiding with him in fellowship will not affect our sonship but will cause our joy to be full!
